Scene Six:

Sometimes the Nose Doesn't Know:

The Eternal Triangle Becomes The Usual Rectangle

Or: Anubis is Born

ISIS has just returned. As OSIRIS emerges again from the palace, she crosses the garden toward him, embraces him, immediately notices NEPHTHYS' scent on him, and pulls away. She picks a melilot flower out of his tunic and holds it toward him, waiting for an answer. She strikes him in his throat with the flower as she pulls away again.

ISIS:

Who? Tell me! Who played with you in the melilot last night?

OSIRIS:

She wasn't you?

ISIS:

She was not.

OSIRIS:

She looked like you, walked like you, sounded like you --

ISIS:

Did she smell like me?

OSIRIS:

I believe not.

ISIS:

You don't recognize the scent of your own wife? What kind of man . . .  (She looks at SET and NEPHTHYS' house, and understands.) Ohh. If you think you have ever seen Set angry . . .

OSIRIS:

If I had known it was Nephthys . . .

ISIS:

She had my blessing. I wish she would have done it without . . .

OSIRIS:

Being you.

ISIS leads him toward the garden, taking off her traveling cloak as they near the bench where OSIRIS and NEPHTHYS lay. ISIS again reacts to the scent of the place. They sit.

NEPHTHYS:

He was not here.

SET:

Then you . . . must have . . .

SET gathers up flower petals from bed and floor, then, furious enough to strike, hurls them at NEPHTHYS. ISIS looks toward SET's house as NEPHTHYS looks out the window at her. SET then crosses toward window, and his eyes meet those of OSIRIS. SET quickly comes out of the house. He throws melilot petals toward ISIS and OSIRIS.

SET:

It's decision time. (To CELEBRANTS:) This time I need a crowd. For this part of it, all of you are working for me.

MA'AT:

(OFF:) Oh, please!

SET:

Oh, not again.

MA'AT KHU appears.

MA'AT:

You will have followers soon enough. It is not yet time.

SET:

When Osiris plays bump the melon with my wife, it is time. Listen to me, feather girl. These are free people. They can decide for themselves. You don't get to stop me from talking to them.

MA'AT:

Please speak in your turn. It is too soon.

SET:

My turn is now.

MA'AT:

Can anyone else talk to him? The air smells like iron here.

SET: You really don't see that Osiris has wronged me?
MA'AT: I see what he has done.

MA'AT KHU vanishes. THOTH KHU appears.

THOTH:

You know other things must be told first. Come back when you have to: when the game begins to grow scarce on the Red Earth .

SET:

What are you saying? Has someone put a curse on the Red Land?

THOTH:

The Red Land doesn't need a curse. It is a curse. Come back when it is your time to speak.

SET:

Why not right now?

THOTH:

I'd have to explain time to you. Will you sit still for mathematics?

SET:

So many secrets. (Crosses toward NEPHTHYS.) I wonder what the main secret is now.

He mimes a swollen, pregnant belly, then snatches his bow and exits. After a long, searching look between ISIS and NEPHTHYS, they and OSIRIS also exit to their homes.

THOTH:

(To CELEBRANTS:) You know the secret. Nephthys began to wear loose, flowing robes as her womb grew big, and she stayed inside her home. During the last three moons she would not let Set, or even her sister, come near her.

If you'd like to continue, you have two choices:
You can hear Thoth, Ma'at, Isis and Nephthys tell How Anubis was Born

Or you can go right to Uncle Set Wants You

Or you can Choose from other Scenes
